Welcome!

For this project, I have drawn 100 original comics inspired by the characteristics of certain animals, and sorted each by the type of humor used.  I hope you smile as you learn a few fun facts about each animal!

The Process

1. Ideation

I knew I wanted to draw animals for this project, so I started with a brainstorm: I wrote down all the animal names, strange characteristics, and jokes that came to mind on a sheet of paper.  To keep organized, I then copied all my ideas from the brainstorm onto a spreadsheet.  As I thought of more ideas, I added them to the spreadsheet.  Most of my ideas were just animal names, so I did some light research on the animals for more inspiration.

2. Sketching

I began each drawing with a rough sketch of the animal and a corresponding caption.  I drew the basic shapes of each animal in red, then added more complex details in highly contrasting colors, like blue and green.

3. Lineart and Color

Once the sketches were complete, I outlined them in black.  I used a thicker brush size for the captions and body outlines, and thinner lines for details like the animals’ faces.  To speed up the coloring process, I used the fill tool to color larger areas.

4. Organization

Once I completed all the drawings,  I reviewed them and tried to determine what exactly made each joke funny.  I came up with eight broad categories, wrote them on a sheet of paper, and sorted the comics into each.
